Tips To Manage Tricky Workplace Situations

The workplace is a complicated environment – office rumours, ghost stories, bootlicking to managers and bosses, the list goes on. Most of us would have also been caught in these undesirable situations. While some might be easy to slide away from, certain situations might be considerably tricky to handle.

Here are some tips on how to manage these tricky workplace situations.

1.Too much work

Being overloaded with work is a situation that most of us are familiar with. However, if you feel that your workload has increased significantly from what is stated in your job description, so much so that toilet breaks stress you out, you definitely have to talk to your supervisor about it. However, the dilemma is having that “talk” with your manager without sounding like you are trying to complain about work.

Instead, schedule a time with your manager so that he or she is able to sit down and really listen to you without having to rush off to another meeting or appointment. Explain that your workload has become too much for you to handle and state specific reasons. For instance, it could be that you have to take on the responsibilities of a colleague who left without anything being removed from your plate. Thereafter, suggest some options and ask your boss which are the key priorities.

2. The work that you are doing differs vastly from your job description

Supposed you were hired to be a "marketing director". However, you find yourself spending most of your time making more cold calls to companies. It might not be a deliberate move by the hiring manager but you are pretty certain that the work you are doing is not what was indicated in the job description and shared during the interview.

Instead of going straight to your boss and being indignant about it, highlight the differences between the work that you have been doing for the past three months and what was mentioned to you during the interview. It would definitely help if you make it clear that you are in a problem-solving mode instead of compliant mode. Your manager might mentioned that the job scope has changed and that it is a decision from the higher ups. However, it is also a good opportunity for you to subtly nudge your manager to adjust your work as well. Either way, this will help you leave the conversation with a clearer picture of what to expect from the job in the future and allow you to make a better decision.

3. You are a constant loggerheads with a particular co-worker

Regardless of how nice you try to be, every conversation with this co-worker ends up in a disagreement which creates so much negativity that it becomes difficult to get projects done.

The first step is to take charge of your ego. Given that everyone has various personalities, you do not necessarily need to like your co-workers and "win" every interaction that both of you have. You only need to be able to work together. Try to find something admirable about that co-worker and focus on that aspect of him or her. You might not necessarily have to grow to like the co-worker in future but it would definitely help to thaw the relations. In every workplace, it is almost impossible to eliminate difficult people so it is key to be able to learn how to work with these difficult co-workers.

There are bound to be numerous trick situations that makes it difficult from you to get away from. Instead of being angry, upset or doing something that might ruin your reputation at work, always make it a point to think through clearly and approach the situation with a clear mind.
